The Sloppy Boys are a band, podcast and comedy group from Los Feliz, CA
The Sloppy Boys are a Los Feliz-based “party rock” band comprising Mike Hanford, Jeff Dutton, and Tim Kalpakis from sketch comedy group The Birthday Boys (IFC Network). Conceived in their basement as a jangly cover band for house parties, the trio started writing original music after the cancellation of their television show.
The boys began releasing summer albums annually, starting with their 2018 cult hit debut Lifelong Vacation, an ode to cracking beers and smoking doobs and rocking out. Soon they were playing sold-out live shows across the country, inspiring a more expansive and adventurous sound for their sophomore effort Dancing on the Wind. Their grandest of all, Paradiso dropped despite the global pandemic in the summer of 2020, completing their “perfect summer trilogy”.
With touring out of the question, the trio hosted weekly zoom parties with fans, planting the seeds for what would become The Sloppy Boys Podcast. Crowned one of Vulture’s Top 3 Comedy Podcasts of 2021, the weekly show finds Mike, Jeff and Tim cracking wise while diving into the history and recipe of a cocktail recognized by the International Bartenders Association.
2022 saw the band embark on their biggest tours to date. That April, the boys travelled to the legendary Sonic Ranch Studios where they teamed with super-producer Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Beck) to record their fourth album Sonic Ranch. The entire process was filmed by director Robert Holguin for his feature length comedy-rock-doc Blood, Sweat and Beers or How The Sloppy Boys Made an Album on a Farm in West Texas.

Press
“It probably shouldn’t be surprising that the trio can play well, but it kinda is. The trio are simultaneously goofing off and playing their music, and one isn’t getting in the way of the other. It’s a gift.” - Brett Callwood, Music Connection 11.28.22
“The LA trio and ‘Birthday Boys’ alums are here to prove that the world needs party bands more than ever.” - James Rickman, Flood Magazine 2.2.21
“An ironic party band that rocks in a decidedly non-ironic way. Insanely catchy, the kind of maddeningly addictive tunes that take up valuable real estate in your mind and refuse to leave” - Nathan Rabin 4.22.19
“While it’s easy for bands to fall into the trap of leaning too far in either direction and landing in a less-than-fulfilling middle ground, The Sloppy Boys manage to walk that fine line between genuinely funny and ‘actually good’ comedy music” - Taylor Grimes, Swim into the Sound 9.5.19
Blood, Sweat and Beers Documentary Feature
In 2022, journalist and documentarian Robert Holguin reached out the boys with a proposition— he would arrange for the boys to stay for a week at the legendary Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas if they’d allow him to film the making of their fourth album. Legendary producer Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Beck, David Byrne) joined them to create Sonic Ranch. The comedy rock doc Blood, Sweat and Beers or How The Sloppy Boys Made an Album on a Farm in West Texas premiered at the El Paso Film Festival, taking home both the Audience Award and the El Paso Filmmaker Award.
“Money Mark elevates the comedian-musicians to flashes of musical brilliance, and teaches us all lessons about the power of good collaboration. [Director Holguin] mostly does straight fly-on-the-wall reporting — a great move, because the dynamic tension between the master and his sloppy students provides comedy galore… anyone who watches the movie will be won over.” - Tim Molloy, MovieMaker
